(emphasis on the S and the M clearly intended) held a Halloween celebration of an entirely different sort. So, dressed merrily in skin-tight bellbottoms and polyester, I made my way to the corner of Houston and Essex where, before descending to Vault, I encountered an unheavenly assemblage of goths, dominatrices and other grim individuals awaiting their admission to Element, Vault’s upstairs neighbor.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik67blrlo98-6ZP6y9JAsvdhMt4V9_I3mZori9ggRRL6Yl_q1qH0ZDeJ3yha4xyUgpHVFfmzN469o28cHVEGTuLkD3RF4Zio-9Lf4kZFjk_eln_UvhzDRTUNy3-3Enq_RmazhcFjphPJIT/s320/EW_Halloween_07_9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137556403264557298" />

In contrast to the menacing dress code being enforced at Element, Vault was all flower-powered heterogeneity. Barney Rubble and Fred Flintstone made an appearance in a clever tribute to ’60s television, as well as Lily’s anachronistic friend Kyoko whose little white bowler hat we decided looked slightly more celebrate-the-victorious-Allied-troops than bring-the-boys-home-from-Vietnam.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh19DPWF6G-3AUClKhafk_D9SovYBusr6MHK1GG5tNNkMIjixhgt6vsO6cNA7PXLG9fv8ZpZlbt9s8HVkajxAAqXXJ9no8_4swdgAEZ21wflARXuqN9s2czLwFrhPEtmCZuTf-tgN7wAcyn/s320/EW-Halloween10.22+(7).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137560985994662210" />

Before long, however, a stream of leather-clad émigrés began making their descent down the stairs. What had we here? Apparently, a decision had been made to open the staircase between the two venues, allowing a free flow of Halloween revelers from one party to the other. One of the first pilgrims, a chubby witch with fishnet stockings, a coffin-shaped handbag and a lollipop in her mouth, followed close behind a young couple chained together at the neck. A science experiment unfolded: what chemical reaction would result as these newcomers decked out in their house of horrors best interacted with all of us ’60s throwbacks?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgznN3e6U_1cJR622QMgZWb-84GPgzWhBu5OmtfEvNWGuJPjAr9Ep1uhZoPf1hXgn5GW1_nRbv4dtSYu0OkMbGkLIQKR0nWM69DMcM2E5fqLYr-iR4LNSfibreLUiZuyP1GmONiH2L8c9sz/s320/EW_Halloween_07_11.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137556424739393794" />

Now, I’ve seen a lot in my six years exploring the nightlife of this iniquitous capital. But the sea of gotho-sado-masochism surging upstairs at SMack!, which bills itself as NYC’s premier fetish party, caught me off-guard. Everyone upstairs was dressed in black. Chimeras with ram’s horns curling out of their dreadlocks stared at my dandy attire through vacant white pupils. A sturdy man in leather rotated a spit to which a young woman was strapped horizontally (like a roasting pig, but without the fire). I lasted only five minutes before I decided to put an end to my peek upstairs (though I ventured back a while later, just in time for a depressing display involving two topless she-devils, some hot wax and a strap-on dildo of a not inconsequential size).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6_F0T6iivab8L_VWa0G6_IkIznzu1t0UGLd-9FwsJLE29FjZYxMEgb-Vm3LGmfoijc9np8OKfHaSUTHKJYMIi3c7MQ7LSHANir3ZGXEylM_cAHGE5C4NSqHBO82LxBXCApczWPXy7ST79/s320/EW_Halloween_07_13.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137556446214230290" />

Downstairs, Elegantly Wasted was getting lively. Our guests from SMack! were digging the electronic stylings of Elegantly Wasted’s resident DJ, Velizar?, and crowded the dance floor. I marveled at the strange circumstances that brought such two unlikely crowds together on the dance floor: hippies mixed easily with harpies, afros and devil’s horns bobbing in unison. Once I got away from the Marilyn Manson soundtrack, I saw they were such a sexy and fun bunch. I met a lovely Cleopatra who asked me if my notepad was part of my costume. Yes, I responded, I’m covering the Vietnam War protests. “Are you kidding?” she laughed. “Dude, this is a fetish party.”

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1Mw1ePyAUBnlX4OvrRgL8lWwHbCDjxvjxbgo5uSPWBWnGd3UaI4HKI_DcU17BwQhA0C5tHfCVYpk60Mj9v-S5IhkODRrcNYI8Xb4IZhwwQSVtD6OC1hM3YLFuyoyfFqDmuiZnDNI65Yr6/s320/VaultVisual+(8).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137560449123750194" />
© Justin Lynch 2007Justin Lynchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11759017760028452976noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5092747821579072655.post-15381857881406990342007-10-29T19:31:00.000-07:002007-10-29T19:32:46.104-07:00November LineUp

InProgress Sessionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02578219097549274735noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5092747821579072655.post-67978411149638265372007-10-18T09:52:00.000-07:002008-01-30T05:49:49.233-08:00Introducing A-Ux at EW party this Saturday, 10.20.07A-ux is deeply interested in experiencing emotional and surreal music.
Inspired by the electronic compositions, he sets out to capture some
of that energy and intensity with electronics and computer. From an
early age, his classical background in piano and his experimental
attitude allowed him to achieve a good balance between musical and
technological aspects. While growing up with a diverse musical style,
he tends not to draw upon solely on one influence. From Debussy, Stone
Temple Pilots, Boards of Canada, his pieces attempt to be timeless and
distinctive. Currently residing in New York, A-ux keeps New York
crowds experiencing his new sound and beat with his acclaimed live
electronica act. Freeman and White wear several hats - Freeman is the lead singer and bass player and White not only plays the drums, but also simultaneously manipulates the electronics. The result is an original sound influenced by groove, gospel, elements of hip-hop and the dark sounds of the early to mid-80s post-modern movement. Their live set contains only bass, drums, vocal and minimal laptop to create a particular sound and vibe. They played at New York venues such as The Knitting Factory, Pianos, R&R, Club Midway, Vault @ Element, Crash Mansion as well as Webster Hall. Faced with the horrifying prospect of attending toute seule and being that loser in the corner with no friends, I soldiered heroically on and, after a brief chat with Crystal, Elegantly Wasted’s elegant hostess, armed myself with a gin and tonic and stationed myself on a couch in the corner to observe the proceedings. To my right, a guy with a bongo drum rattled out a tattoo in time to Peter Munch’s opening set.

Lily, the organizer of these parties, had planned a little surprise for Velizar?, the main DJ. It was his birthday, and at midnight, Happy Birthday came over the sound system and she emerged with a birthday cake. About half an hour later, Velizar? got on the decks, the crowd started piling in and I was induced out of my spot on the couch to join the dancefloor. The music was fabulous and I got down. Everyone looked so happy to be there. It’s a testament to the great vibe at this party that I enjoyed myself so much despite not knowing a soul.

© 2007 Justin LynchInProgress Sessionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02578219097549274735noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5092747821579072655.post-40945660133122693002007-09-19T11:02:00.000-07:002007-10-09T08:57:50.749-07:00Elegantly Wasted Saturday with Velizar 0922 [Session Three]From time to time, you will come across people, whether in your professional live or personal, who just happen commit as much as you are! And, it is always refreshing to meet those beings! And, this is how my experiences with Different Creatures have been. My working with them strengths my faith and believes there are people like us who do what they love and work hard for what they love. So, it is a great pleasure to be presenting the highly anticipated debut performance of this super talent group this Saturday.

The members from Different Creatures are 7 musicians who are all individually highly accomplished in their own disciplines. Some soloed in the album with HipPop giants like 50 Cents, played live with John Lengend, featured and sponsored by Yamaha, collaborated with artists like Elton John and Enya, and appeared in the show such as “Good Morning America” and “The Today Show”. This is the first time that all 7 of them get together and perform under one roof. And, we should expect them fabulously tear down the roof with our In progress Resident DJ, Velizar?.

Different Creatures is a hypnotic spin cycle of lush lounge, sparkling electronica and killer Afrolatin percussion. Founded by Lisa Liu, Andrea “Fluterscooter” Fisher and Kate Craw in 2006, the group has been steadily building its musical scope, flourishing creatively with the addition of new band members and their diverse influences. The group's first musical creations grew from electronica-based collaborations between Liu and Fisher, who merged the sounds of their main instruments (violin and flute respectively) with rich layerings of electronically generated rhythms and melodies as a foundation for Craw's songwriting. The group has recently expanded to include Steve Williams on keys, Elan Danohe on bass, Simon Boyar on drums and Gabriella Dennery on Afro-Caribbean percussion. This personnel expansion has launched a fresh wave of musical invention that has quickly spiralled out into a huge range of new sounds and styles.

Integrating a wide spectrum of musical genres, from pure electronica to neo-soul, funk to worldbeat, Different Creatures is committed to collaboration, innovation and expanding musical possibility. The group's name reflects the diversity of its members' nationalities, musical influences and personalities.InProgress Sessionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02578219097549274735noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5092747821579072655.post-66865696467658650542007-09-14T08:33:00.000-07:002007-10-09T08:57:32.011-07:00Elegantly Wasted Saturday with Velizar 0915 [Session Two]Here at In Progress, we are all very excited about tomorrow night's party.

As some of you might be aware of that the main purpose of Elegantly Wasted Saturdays with Velizar @ Vault is to enhance the overall music quality in the nightclub environment. Hence, we are working very hard to bring in topnotch musicians to work with Velizar?. During the course of coming months, you will all be witnessing some most amazing young musicians in our days in our party and working together to introduce the sound of electronic music to the public.

Tomorrow night, our featured musicians are Nick Demopoulos (Guitar), Tomas Fujiwara (Drums) and Jeremy Wilms (bass) for the NYC based trio, Exegesis. The definition of Exegesis is the belief that symbols, scientific thought, astronomical ideas, numerical ratios and conceptual art and architecture can be expressed in sound. The group consists of guitar, bass, drums and makes use of live samplers and interactive music software in performances. EXEGESIS has a very identifiable, eclectic group sound and is committed to maintaining a high level of musicianship and virtuosity during its performances.

The performance will start at 11:15pm sharp and will merge into Velizar?'s infamous 4 hour DJ set that will take you on to a music journey that shakes your heart and touch your soul and keep you on the dance floor nonstop.InProgress Sessionshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02578219097549274735noreply@blogger.com0
